General Questions

What is the difference between an eBook and a paperback?
An eBook is an electronic download in the form of a PDF, LIT or TXT file. A paperback is a hard copy that we send to you by standard mail order. Please get used to the difference and do not confuse the two. If you want an instantly downloadable file to read off your computer, then order the eBook version. If you want a hard copy sending in the mail, then order the paperback version. Please do not rely on the google search results alone, because unless you also specify 'ebook' or 'paperback' in the search criteria, then google will display the results for both paperbacks and ebooks. Be sure you are ordering the correct format before placing the order. With the exception of our comics and short sharp shocks, all of our main eBooks cost £5.99, so if the price is any different then you will most certainly be placing an order for a paperback. Paperbacks generally cost £8.50 or more.

Is there a list somewhere of forthcoming titles?
Yes, on the Silver Moon News page. You can also subscribe to our Mailing List to be informed by email the moment new eBook and Paperback titles are available.

Privacy Policy

Do you pass my information on to anyone else?
No. All the information you submit goes no further than us. We do not pass your name, address, phone number, e-mail address, or any information whatsoever on to any 3rd-party companies. Not now, not ever. We value your privacy very highly!

I get an error message when I click the "Submit order" button, but don't know how to correct it. Please help!
Make sure you have filled in all 16 numbers of your credit card correctly, and with no spaces. If the error relates to an incorrect phone number, remove the spaces in the number you typed. eg. instead of 491 6767 5643 type 49167675643. If you get an error from the secure server saying "The transaction failed" or "we are sorry to inform you that..." then, assuming that your credit card is valid and you've typed in all the data correctly, this will probably mean that there is a temporary intermittent fault with the ePDQ system, and therefore we recommend that you wait up to 30 minutes or so and then try to place the order again. Although this situation is rare, it has been known to happen from time to time...
If you get an Actinic Session Timeout error message after trying to Submit the order for payment processing via the Securehosting method, then to correct this problem, you need to make sure that cookies are enabled in your browser, and/or that cookies for www.secure-server-hosting.com are not blocked.

Do you store any of my information? How comes the cart remembers me next time I visit?
The Shopping Cart stores a small text file (known as a cookie) on your computer. All this does is make the cart remember what books you have ordered within any particular session. No-one else sees this cookie and it doesn't store any personal/private information. It also doesn't track your movements on the internet like some other obtrusive sites.
adultbookshops.com itself doesn't use cookies, so if you don't add any items to the cart or place an order then you won't ever receive a cookie. You will find that most sites these days use cookies to remember who you are. Some just store preferences or username & password details, whereas others (usually those annoying, flashing advertising banners) track how many times you've visited the page and which banners you've clicked, or not clicked. In our opinion, this is an invasion of privacy. Neither our site nor the Shopping Cart makes use of these types of cookies, and never will. And most importantly, as already stated above, we will never pass on any of your information to anyone else.

Top

How secure is the site? Can anyone else see the information I submit when placing an order?
Depending on which of the two available payment methods you choose via the drop-down menu, the checkout process is handled by one of securehosting or paypal. The cart uses 128-bit encryption and is certified hack-free. Trust us! We value your privacy and security very highly.

When I save the download page for an eBook to my hard drive and open it, Why does Internet Explorer warn me that it has 'restricted this file from showing active content'?
The only thing it is blocking is a bit of Javascript which makes the navbar along the top light up when you mouse-over it. Trust us, there is nothing harmful about that code, and it basically boils down to Internet Explorer being a bit dumb when it comes to detecting what scripts are safe or harmful. You can safely allow that Javascript to run if you wish, though the page/downloads will still work properly regardless.

Terms and Conditions of Use

What is your Returns Policy? How do I cancel an order or get a refund?
Naturally, you cannot return any digital product that has been downloaded from our website. For paperbacks and merchandise, please submit all queries via e-mail to: silvermoonbooks-orders @ yahoo.co.uk (remove the spaces) or via any method listed in the Contact section. Be sure to include your Order No. in any correspondence.
If you placed an order for paperbacks, but wanted eBooks instead, then we can automatically make the necessary adjustments, refund you the difference, and then send you the download url's via email. If vice-versa, and you placed an order for eBooks but wanted paperbacks, then you will need to email us with your request first, and we will then cancel/refund your order in full, and you will then need to place an entirely new order for the paperbacks. The reason for this is because paperbacks cost more than eBooks. We can manually refund differences, but we cannot charge for extra. This is only something you the buyer can authorize during the secure online process. Whatever the case, we do not set out to rip anyone off, not now, not ever! We will always put you, the customer, first.
Please note that all charges/refunds to your credit card account will show as Shadowline Publishing Ltd on your CC statement.

Ordering and Payment

Can I use a credit card other than Visa or Mastercard?
Yes. We also accept Visa Electron, JBC, Switch, Delta and Solo cards. If using a Switch card, then please remember to type in your 'Issue No.' and/or 'Valid From' date in the specified field. If you choose the Paypal payment option instead of the Securehosting method, then you can also pay with an American Express card, including any of the other credit cards already mentioned above.

Top

Can I pay by cheque/check via standard snail mail?
Yes, but not directly via this site. You can download, print and send our Mail Order Form (PDF - 150kb) or contact us directly to request further info and assistance.

Top

Can I pay by faxing my order and details to you?
Yes. You can fax us your order if you wish. You will need to include your name (as found on credit card), delivery address, the list of paperbacks you require, and your credit card details. Alternatively, you can post all details to us via standard or registered snail mail. However, we strongly do NOT recommend sending credit card details via e-mail.

Top

Do I have to fill in all the required fields on the checkout form?
If you are buying eBooks only, then the only essential details we need from the first checkout page are: Name, as appears on credit card. Because the receipt and download instructions are provided online at the end of the ordering process, you only need to provide a valid email address if you would also wish to receive an email copy of the receipt and download instructions. Note, we do NOT pass your email address on to anyone else. Other 'required' fields cannot remain blank, but you can type anything in these fields eg. Zip Code: ABC 123, ie. the Cart will accept any input as long as the 'required' fields don't remain blank. For paperback and merchandise orders, all 'required' fields are required to be correct, otherwise we cannot dispatch your order. Again, you only need to supply a valid email address if you would also prefer to receive a printable email receipt for your own records.

Top

It's already been longer than this and my books still haven't arrived.
What's happening?

Contact us quoting the Order No. you were given when you placed the order. We will then check to make sure we've received, processed and dispatched your order. We will promptly reply, usually within one day.

Top

How are the books sent and are there any extra hidden costs?
All books are sent first class, by airmail for overseas. Postage & Packaging, VAT and Handling costs are all included in the price. There are no extra hidden charges.

Electronic Books

Where do I get electronic downloads of your books in PDF, TXT or LIT format?
Adult Bookshops is the official site for Silver Moon eBook downloads.

I cannot access the URL you provided
Most of the problems that come to our attention turn out to be general internet problems regardless of how they manifest. The most frequently reported problem is in fact a dropped connection. Internet users must get the 'helpful' "page can't be displayed" message several times a day, but only seem to panic when they get one during a trip to the shop.
"Rip Off!"
No way. Disconnect, redial, and try again. Your book will still be at the URL we gave you. (If you have lost the URL, don't panic, there is an email already on its way to you, confirming your order and listing your URLs.) It can happen that one of our URLs has become corrupted but it is much more likely that the web is temporarily overburdened and has dropped you.
If, after a couple of tries, you still can't download your eBooks, just send us an email and we can then either send you the download URLs or the actual files to you as an email attachment. Please include the Order Ref. No. in all correspondence, and for a speedier reply, please also include a list of the titles you ordered.

Top

I can't read this file!
This, the second most frequently reported problem, is largely a result of a confusion between the generic and the specific. A book is a book is a book, but an ebook is not necessarily the same thing as another. Use the right reader! If all else fails, read the instructions, or contact us for further help.

Where has my file gone?
When downloading a PDF file, make sure that you save it to disc. Depending on how you have set up your browser, Acrobat (.pdf) files might not be saved automatically. It is always quickest and safest to download your file directly to disc, but if you forget to save the file, just go back to the URL and download it again. The easiest method is to right-click the icon of your choice (PDF, LIT or TXT) and select "Save Target As" (Internet Explorer) or "Save Link As" (Netscape/Mozilla) and save the file to a suitable folder on your hard drive, eg. "My Documents\My Library"

I didn't get my full order.
This is a tricky one to track down but, again, seems to be a telecommunications problem. Adultbookshops.com neither handles your order nor money directly. That is done (for your security) by a trusted third party secure server (SecureHosting via Barclays ePDQ). They handle the orders but do not gain from the individual transactions, being paid by us for providing a service.
It sometimes (rarely) happens, though, that the buyer does not seem to get the full URL list. Why this should happen is not easy to track down because all the most likely causes are actions by the buyer or problems with the telephone network. Anything that will stop a page loading into a browser will terminate the URL list. Be patient. Don't click on things while the page is loading.
It is because this type of problem was foreseen that the shopping cart automatically sends an email confirming your order and listing the URLs. If, for whatever reason, you do not get the full list, download your email. If you had spent a few minutes cursing us for crooks the email could well already have arrived.
Some buyers (for whatever reason) do not give their true email addresses, so do not receive the confirmation letter. Sometimes even the emailed URL list is truncated. In other cases, the confirmation email might get placed automatically in your web-based spam folder, or at the very worst, your isp might be erroneously blocking our emails entirely (apparently, and for reasons totally unbeknown to us, adultbookshops.com is blocked by hotmail). Fine. Don't scream. Just email us and we'll send the URL's to you. Again, please include the Order No. in all correspondence and, for a speedier reply, please also include a list of the titles you ordered.

My Mac won't read this.
A reader for the Microsoft Reader (.lit) format has yet to be implemented on the Apple Macintosh. Apple users should not download this format unless they are absolutely certain that they want to do so.
If you are running a Windows emulator on the Mac, Microsoft Reader should work properly as long as you perform the downloads from within the emulator.

Top

Netscape won't read this.
Customers report that Netscape Navigator loads Microsoft Reader (.lit) files into the browser instead of passing them on to Microsoft Reader. This is not a problem with the file but with the browser.
Until a definitive solution to the problem can be made, we recommend either:
  1. use Microsoft Internet Explorer to download Microsoft Reader files. This goes against the grain with some devotees of Netscape, but it is not actually a sin to use the dreaded Microsoft product when Netscape falls down.
  2. download the file in Netscape then save the page to disc. If the saved page does not have the proper (.lit) extension, rename it, then double click on the file to load it into Microsoft Reader.
  3. (Recommended) download the file directly to disc, then double click on it to load it into the reader.

The text file doesn't display/print properly
Because of the plethora of combinations of computer model, word processor and operating system it is impossible to supply a file that does not cause a problem for somebody. The plain text files that we supply are designed to cause the fewest problems
We have received queries on the following points:
  • Line length: The only non-text character the files contain is an end of line code at the end of each paragraph. This should only cause a problem if you are using a very old system (DOS perhaps) or are using a "no-frills" word processor like WordPad and do not have the "wordwrap" options set correctly. To solve the problem, enable word wrapping before loading the file or word wrap once the file is loaded.
  • Paragraph indents: In the bad old days, if you wanted a paragraph indent you had to include several spaces at the beginning of each paragraph. On most modern word processors, doing this leads to a very messy looking document (lots of green squiggles in Word, for instance). To get paragraph indents either:
    1. Select all the text, then apply a "body text" style to it.
    2. Select all the text, then change "first line indent" stop on the ruler.
    3. Use "Find and Replace" to change all the "paragraph returns" to "paragraph returns" + three or four spaces.

Do you send anything (invoice, receipt, etc) via standard mail?
No. We do not send anything to you via standard mail when you place an order for eBooks only, even if you supply a valid postal address. The only external notification you will get is that there will be an entry for "Silver Moon Books Ltd" on your next credit card statement.

Technical Problems

I keep getting a "HTTP 404 - File Not Found" error when trying to add items to the cart or when trying to view my basket or go to the checkout. How can I fix this?

This problem is usually caused by either a bad internet cache or an expired cookie. It's possible that you have old pages of our site in your cache, or your adultbookshops.com cookie has become corrupted. To resolve the issue, empty your internet cache (eg. Internet Explorer 7 > Options > General tab > Delete Temporary Internet Files) and/or delete the adultbookshops.com cookie(s) (eg. via: Internet Explorer 7 > Options > General tab > Browsing History > Settings > View Files). Once you've deleted the cookie and emptied the cache, everything on adultbookshops.com should work okay again. Note that the method for deleting the internet cache and cookie(s) may vary with different browsers.

Other Questions

My question was not answered above. How can I get further information?

Contact us at: silvermoonbooks-website @ yahoo.co.uk

Note: Remove the spaces for email address to be valid.

If the query is in relation to an electronic download, please provide the Order ID number, a list of titles that you ordered, and if relevant, as much information as possible about your computer configuration (Windows OS, Internet connection type, browser name and version, etc) and the error that occurred. Make sure that the Subject line contains one of: "Re: Order Number", "Re: Order ID", or "Re: Thank You for Your Order Just Placed". Or if the query is not related to an Order, then please use "Re: Silver Moon Books", otherwise your email may be treated as spam and will therefore be automatically deleted before it even reaches us.

Alternatively, you can also contact us via our online Contact Form.
